HELP: connecting 255 devices in network

Hi,
In my application in which there are over 200 devices and every device is taking reading of two sensors,
Temprature and Water level.

The application is to control
the temprature of the water tanks in a building.

So the topology should be able to cover distance also.

What type of technology should i use??

Re:HELP: connecting 255 devices in network

Hi-

My firm has implemented a similar system using the lowest cost LMI devices - has been running successfully for past 6 mo. (application is agricultural - new ones are monitoring/controlling/displaying factory conditions/machinery)

We chose RS485 which provides long range and noise rejection due to its differential mode of operation. Simple, low cost interconnect is achieved with standard CAT5 cable.

To save cable cost & installation labor we run in a primarily "point to point" topology. (Master/Base is wired to remote_1, remote_1 to remote_2 etc.)

We found the need for a small, economical Lcd-switch input - placed at each remote. This allowed monitoring & control & communication back to the base - from the remote location.

Should your requirement expand our system monitors/displays: temp, humidity, pressure, voltage, flow and light level...

Re:HELP: connecting 255 devices in network

i would have a look at CAN. again its differential, low cost and works well over cat5.

CAN uses bus topology and can work up to kms at lower bus rates.
