FreeRTOS.org V4.3.0 Incudes Support for Luminary Micro's new Ethernet and CAN Stellaris MCUs

FreeRTOS.org V4.3.0 Includes Support for Luminary Micro's new Ethernet-enabled and CAN-enabled Stellaris® family of ARM® Cortex™-M3 microcontrollers

June 5, 2007 - FreeRTOS.org™ announces the immediate availability of a port for Luminary Micro's new Ethernet-enabled (LM3S6000 series) and CAN-enabled (LM3S2000 series) Stellaris® family of ARM® Cortex™-M3 microcontrollers. The software is available for download from www.FreeRTOS.org; immediately providing a proven real-time scheduler to developers utilizing new Stellaris family members. Further reducing time-to-market, FreeRTOS.org has also released a free web server application demonstration that executes on the Luminary EK*-LM3S6965 Ethernet evaluation board.

FreeRTOS.org is a portable, open source, miniature Real Time Kernel for use in embedded applications. FreeRTOS.org is free to download licensed under a modified GPL, and can be used royalty free in commercial applications, subject to the adherence of license conditions. A commercially licensed solution, OpenRTOS™, is available from WITTENSTEIN high integrity systems – who can also provide professional support and development services.

WITTENSTEIN also offers SafeRTOS™, an IEC 61508 Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 compliant solution based on FreeRTOS.org that provides an ideal solution for a wide range of safety-critical applications.

“FreeRTOS.org provides a valuable option to our customers as it is both easy to use and highly efficient in real embedded memory-constrained applications," said Jean Anne Booth, Chief Marketing Officer of Luminary Micro. “The ability to move from an open-source solution to a commercial licence provides our customers with excellent flexibility.”

FreeRTOS.org allows engineers to easily use the powerful features and extended resources of the new Ethernet-enabled (LM3S6000 series) Stellaris family members. The demo application features an embedded web server that permits two way exchanges of dynamically generated data between the web browser and the embedded device utilizing the Stellaris MCU’s integrated Ethernet MAC and PHY. The V4.3.0 FreeRTOS.org port also features a new configuration that permits increased flexibility in interrupt management. This allows high priority interrupts with very low timing jitter to run concurrently with FreeRTOS.org, enabling high-bandwidth communications through the devices communications ports.

“We are excited to work with Luminary and their range of high-performance microcontrollers, " said FreeRTOS.org founder Richard Barry. "Many designers are moving to high-performance microcontrollers such as those from Luminary Micro, and are finding the pure interrupt-driven model does not scale as processing power increases. The FreeRTOS.org community helps ensure a simple, compact Real Time Kernel is available to make migration as simple and painless as possible."
