eLua

Image

eLua is an open source project that aims to introduce the programming language Lua to the embedded world. Lua is the perfect example of a minimalistic, yet full-featured programming language, and although generally advertised as a "scripting language" (and used accordingly especially in the game industry), it is also fully capable of running stand-alone programs. While used mainly on desktop computers, its small resource requirements and exceptional speed (one of the fastest interpreted languages in existence) make it suitable for running in microcontroller-based systems, and Cortex CPUs are a good target for eLua, given their excellent performance and rich peripheral set. The aim of the project is to have a fully functional development environment on the microcontroller itself, without the need to install a specific toolchain on the PC side. The ability to develop programs interactively on the Cortex CPU, as well as the on-chip and remote debugging capabilities that eLua will eventually provide and the powerful peripheral libraries bundled with the language are key features of the project, enabling rapid application development and simple maintenance with minimum effort and low resource requirements.

The eLua project is a joint effort of two individuals: Bogdan Marinescu (SC SAFESOL SRL) and Dado Sutter (PUC-Rio).
